Barnsdale Road Battery Energy Storage System
Our Proposals
BSR Energy’s proposals for Land at Barnsdale Road would deliver the following:
A Battery Energy development with a total import and export capacity of up to 80 MW.
Ecological enhancements to the site will be achieved through maintaining and enhancement of existing hedgerows and surrounding vegetation, and the creation of wildlife grassland, thereby improving the existing landscape features in and around the site. These measures will be explored in greater detail in collaboration with the Council throughout the consultation period.
Barnsdale Road is a ready to connect project, being subject to an early connection offer from the grid. This means that, if Barnsdale Road achieves planning consent, it would be able to connect before 2030, helping Leeds City Council achieve its net zero aims.
The proposed BESS development would have an operational lifespan of 40 years, meaning that following the decommissioning the land can be returned to agricultural use.
Secure the future of a local family run farm, enabling them to continue grazing livestock on the land in question.
The creation of jobs through installation, ongoing maintenance, and decommissioning, helping to further support the local economy.
Where is the proposed site?
Our proposed BESS site would sit on land just to the west of Barnsdale Road, Kippax Park Gardens, Allerton Bywater, Castleford, WF10 2AX. The BESS will have a storage capacity of up to 80MW.
The site will be accessed from the Barnsdale road, 600m south of the Home Farm and follows a pre-existing track.
The site is a small parcel of land that has previously been farmland. The site is already partially hidden from view by a tree belt to the north and a hedgerow to the south and west. These will be kept, in addition to the creation of a wildlife grassland to improve biodiversity in the area.
What will it look like?
The infrastructure will include battery energy storage containers, an underground cable, access tracks, security gates and CCTV.
Landscaping including generous biodiversity enhancements are proposed to screen the development, and minimise impact on its surroundings. The scheme will also include other biodiversity and landscape enhancement measures to provide significant biodiversity net gain.

The global climate is changing faster than we have ever seen before. By supporting renewable energy schemes, such as the one we are proposing at Barnsdale Road, we are taking an important step forward in the fight against climate change and will be helping to contribute towards a secure and stable supply of electricity for the United Kingdom.
Community Benefit
BSR are pleased to announce our intention to provide a Community Benefit Fund alongside our proposals, of up to £160,000, to support local projects and to benefit the local community.
We are keen to hear your ideas for where we might partner for the provision of this fund. Please get in touch with us via the methods outline on the website, or speak to a team member at our public consultation event.
What are the benefits of Barnsdale Road?
Leeds Council declared a climate emergency in July 2019. Our proposal at Barnsdale Road will assist in securing and stabilising the supply of electricity throughout the U.K and contributing to the Government’s target of net zero by 2050.
This is a temporary development with a 40-year lifespan, after which the land can be retuned to farmland. The site is also committed to enhancing biodiversity, with an anticipated net gain of at least 10%.
